Today we’re rounding up some of my favorite recipes infused with green tea powder, AKA matcha!
What is matcha, you may ask? It is essentially a finely ground powder of specific tea leaves that have been specially grown and dried. Tea leaves used in matcha are covered in shade cloths while growing; this introduces a better flavor and texture overall. Leaves are typically hand picked, steamed, dried, and aged in cold storage.
With traditional tea, you steep the leaves in water and then remove them (like when you use a tea bag). Here, because the leaves are powdered, you’re actually consuming them. The leaves used in it are young, which helps lend a bright green color. Consuming these leaves has a lot of health benefits, which you may have heard! For example, matcha is very rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. It also includes caffeine, which some people find to be less jitter-inducing than coffee. Feel free to read more about the heath benefits here.
What does matcha taste like?
Many people describe matcha as “grassy,” but in a pleasant sense. It’s slightly vegetal and also sweet. The taste can vary on the quality of the leaves used.
While it can be expensive, I recommend searching out a high-quality matcha when preparing these recipes. I respect the cultural implications of mainstream matcha sourcing, so I try to shop from authentic Japanese brands I feel good about supporting. Here is one I love!
